Woodland Emergence

I think I've mentioned before that my front yard is not actually a yard, but the edge of an Oak-Hickory Woodland. I've let it be, for the most part, to the chagrin of my husband, who likes the suburban look to his lawns. He gets the back yard, and the woods are mine. The woods, the wild flowers and the wild life are the best part of living here, even if our house has a bit of a white trash or hillbilly vibe to it. It suits me. And every Spring I run around the woods and the yard like a kid in a candy store, excited to see all my friends again.

The brambles are budding out. Wild Rose, Gooseberry and Wild Black Raspberry all have leaves now.

Mayapples have poked their heads from the ground. I love how they seem to offer their flower seed up like a treasure, or a baby for blessing from the sun.

Trilliums are up everywhere, almost overnight.

Interestingly, as mild as this Spring has been, we are a week to two weeks behind last year's emergence. I have only the tiniest hint of the trout lilies up, and they were in full bloom a week ago last year. The wild phlox have plenty of leaves up and I hope they don't get frostbit before April is done with us. Thankfully the cherry shrub is waiting longer to bloom this year, since last year's hard frost destroyed all the fruit. I'm really looking forward to some tart jelly this year. I can only wait and hope. Nature has her own plan and schedules, and they remain a mystery to me, as I watch every day, humbled, amazed and grateful.

  1. I love that you have kept your front yard more natural. I too love walking around the yard in the spring to see old friends emerge. Here in GA the sprouting happened a week Earlier than prior years. We have roses going crazy beautiful and dogwoods changing to green leaves now.

  2. Isn't it amazing how every year's spring is just a completely new miracle to us?

  3. Jealous! You're inspiring me to take off through the canyons and see what's shaking. Should be lots of wildflowers about now and hills covered with mustard. I love the May Apple holding up baby lion king. So great to step out of your house to all this! deb

  5. Lovely! Spring here is slooooow this year, or maybe it just feels that way to me. I've been grumpy. I've had my eyes closed. But the other day I noticed a skinny tree in someone's front yard, still strung up with Christmas lights (winters being what they are around here, many people just leave their lights up year round...really not much point in taking them down when spring, summer and fall can span just 4 months together!). These lights caught my eye because of their vivid lime green hue, and I went in for a closer look. They weren't lights at all, but fat yellow-green buds as big as Christmas bulbs with the uncertain sunlight catching them just so, making them glow! I thought of you. You would have made such lovely photos out of that pathetic, skinny, stunted, suburban tree bursting with light and spring!

  6. I will have to check out some of the walking trails around here, see what is poking its head out of the ground... All I have seen around here is pussywillows!

  7. I feel the same way. I always say my home is like living at camp and I've been running around enjoying caterpillars and lizards. My husband isn't big on yard work so we let loose with wildflower seed. We also have the distinction of being the neighborhood white trash among the manicured lawns but I find people picking flowers in my front yard! : )

  8. Thanks for letting me know what that odd shaped piece was on top of the Mayapple. My sister recently sent me a picture she took of one on her walk...and we didn't know what the growth coming out of the top was...makes perfect sense...a seed pod offered up like a treasure!

Thanks for including me on your walk. enjoy your photos.

  10. Spring! I love it! Trillium are my absolute favorite. There's something about how fragile they look and the number 3. Gorgeous photos.
