Luna and Friends

Another trip to the mountains, and what moths I found!  This newly emerged luna let us hold her before we set her free. I hope she found a mate and laid dozens of eggs. I can't explain my attraction to them, they may as well be kittens, that's how much I want to hold them. Maybe I am crazy. They don't need to be held, but I can't help myself. I chased down a cecropia at the Ingalls grocery store and set it out of harms way, but didn't have my camera. Here's some of the cuties I did catch with my camera.

The butterflies were everywhere, so lovely, but it's the moths I am drawn to. I'm happy that this trip I found more live ones than I did dead.  I know the critters have to eat too, but still....

Hope your summer is filled with magic too.

  3. Beautiful! I had to laugh about you wanting to touch all of them. I'm like that with salamanders and frogs (and earthworms). Maybe with everything but snakes, actually...

  4. Gorgeous little guys. That spotty one is fantastic. The sphynx moths have returned here but I've yet to see a Luna, Cecropia, or my Carolina Sphinx months I love so well. I think they're being shy this year.

  5. You hold them? Maybe I should get less scared of them then...

  6. Is that big green one a luna moth???

Mia and I saw one in the woods a few weeks ago. Had never seen anything like it. It was enormous!

  7. They are so stunning! I remember the first time I saw one of the green ones. We were driving to the mountains at night and there was one stuck on a gas station door. I was thrilled by it because I had never seen one in my area. We do get the black/white spotted ones and I always stop to admire them because they are so cool.

  8. The moths are my favorites too. But the butterflies are pretty as well. Thanks for the Ransom Riggs suggestion about the youtube videos. I am such a fan now. He's done some amazing work. The Salton Sea my favorite. Thanks again for stopping in at Maggie's and passing on the information.
    Have a great weekend.
