Taking Inventory

Howling wind and driving rain woke me this morning at 6am. I had no intention of getting up that early, but remembering the porch windows were open got me out of bed. The power was out, so I lit the gas stove and made my husband his morning coffee, because I'm awesome like that. Luckily the tree limb that came down wasn't all the way across the driveway, so he didn't have to get completely soaked to start his day. I went back to bed for a fitful little sleep, interrupted by things beeping because the power was still out, and a nervous and not so bright poodle-doodle who barks insanely at the slightest noise. It's a toss up as to what is costing me the most sleep: hot flashing heart palpatating hell, snoring bedmate or stupid dog. Last night was a trifecta.

Once I surrendered and got up, knowing the mom taxi had to run regardless of the weather or the electricity, it took both cups of coffee and a lot of mental coaxing to get my brain to wake up too. Days like this, at 52, I can't fathom what 62 or 72 might feel like, providing I ever make it that far. I wake up I take inventory: Neck sore? Check. Joints aching? Check? Knees working? Check? Brain still knows the basics? Check. Ambulatory? Check. So far so good. It's not ideal, but it beats the alternative.

After my car pooling duties were done, I grabbed the camera and did a walk about to see the state of the yard. It's been a hell of a year for us, so hot, so dry, so relentless. We've had rain three times this summer, and each time accompanied by a brutal wind storm, and after the mayhem, less than an inch in the rain gauge. I try not to think about the lush years of the past, or the plants and trees I've lost, and  just focus on what's still here. I figure that my short time on this piece of earth, 15 years, is nothing in the grand scheme. I probably don't have a clue what this land has endured, what it's capable of enduring, what resilience it holds. I think about Darwinism quite a bit, though when I look around this place. Survival of the fittest, indeed.

The lovely oak tree that took a direct lightning hit two years ago struggles mightily. I got a quote to cut it down, but the half of it that is still alive is making acorns like I've never seen. I don't have it in me to kill it. Not yet, not while it's fighting so hard to do what a tree is supposed to do.

My barren strawberries and my beautiful Chicago sunrise daylilies are crispy, lifeless and dessicated and if they survive, I'll do a happy dance right in front of them next Spring, I swear. I have three patches of these lovely lilies, and only one has managed to bloom this year, barely. I took a moment in the heat to snap a few photos, and to thank them for giving their all this year, and to apologize for not watering. I didn't have it in me this summer, nor did the well.

2012:

2011:

I know. I know. I could have watered. I did triage this summer, saving 6 vegetables in the garden and 10 potted plants, and that was all I could manage.  We've never had sustained heat and drought like this before, and I just kept hoping it would rain. It didn't, not enough. Tomorrow is supposed to be 101. I can hardly wait.

These baby squash are among my biggest accomplishments this summer. They should be dead, but I did manage to drag some water their way almost every day for the last six weeks. They are my favorite vegetable, and I've struggled to raise a decent crop, as previous years have been so wet they got rot. Go figure.  I've harvested one small orange pepper and three plum tomatoes and I'm not expecting much else, besides my kale and collards. There's always next year, right?

The coneflowers and black eyed susans are stunted and several patches are just gone, but I tried not to be sad, to focus on the ones that are still here. They're fighting a good fight this year. Me too.

They're little but they're still lovely.

We didn't lose trees like our neighbors did in the last two storms, just a big branch here and there from the hickory and cherry and oak trees. All in all, things could be a lot worse, for me and mine and my garden. So I'm going to count my blessings and hope for better next year.

This lovely sunflower grew under the birdfeeder and was a happy surprise.
These days, a happy surprise is more than I try to hope for, so I'm extra grateful.

Hope you get some happy surprises in your yard, your summer, your life, too.

A dry spell

It's been pretty dry here. For blogging and the weather. The news said this is the driest summer in 30 years for the Chicago area. Hot and dry. Add summer laziness and post surgical laziness and physical limitations and you get a bunch of nothing. I've barely been keeping up with my emails, let alone blogging. Don't even mention housework. I can't tell you what I've done with the last few weeks except drive my youngest to volleyball camps and practices, to try to sleep and eat well, and not overdo anything.

My Dove Chocolate wrapper told me it's OK to slow down. I put it on the fridge for a reminder. I love you, Dove Chocolates.

I have done one fun thing this summer, something both old and new. Daughter thought she'd give beach volleyball a try, and the tournaments are downtown on the lakefront and so far it's been a blast, except for long walks on the sand carrying crap on my out of shape legs, but I'm not complaining. Beats the heck out of sitting in a loud metal box all weekend watching indoor volleyball.

Sunshine, water, blue skies, dozens of happy girls playing hard and having fun, a sun shade, a cooler full of drinks, and great, healthy food. Maybe even a little wine.

What more could I ask of a summer?

Here's what we've been watching:

What a perfect day.

The yellow cabana on the left is us. Prime real estate.

She's learned a very important lesson - keep your mouth closed when diving in the sand.

That's daughter to the left of the coolest coach on the planet.

She's pretty good for a beginner.

A beach on the edge of a city. With cool fresh water for swimming. Pretty nice.

I'd have sat around watching tv all month, so I'm grateful my family found an adventure for me.

I missed Lake Michigan.

Hope you're having some adventures of your own, something scenic, sunny and fun.

Stormy Weather

Some storms are unwelcome, but this one was not.
It was a beauty.

A wall of clouds came at us so fast I barely got the camera in time.

It was a matter of minutes before the winds gusted to 60 miles per hour.
The temperature dropped 20 degrees which was a blessing.
We don't usually see this many 100+ degree days in June.

Then the rain came. Glorious rain. It's been weeks since we saw rain.
The grass is dead, the lilacs and hydrangeas wilted.
Everything is desperate for rain.

We only got 1/4 inch, but there is another storm on the way.
I couldn't be happier about bad weather.

And happy to have something make me want to pick up the camera.
These are the first pictures I've taken in almost a month.
Two record dry spells broken in one weather front.

Hope your weather is good to you too.

Apologies to Billy and Lena, but Etta's version is my favorite.

Lighten up, Francis

If you're a Bill Murray fan, you get the title. If not, you should watch Stripes for some silly fun.

I've been wondering for a while why some blogs have wider spaces for text, and peeved that mine was so narrow. The way my life works, whenever I try to fix something that ain't broke, I really break it. Like updating software for my phone or computer or rearranging digital files. I've got a knack for turning expensive electronics into bricks. I'm sure you can imagine.

I haven't fussed with the template on blogger for years, because, well, I'm me and I hate blogger. But my yearning for more space got the best of me, and who knew? They added little slidey bars to allow you to designate space for the text and the sidebar. Very exciting discovery for me today. So while I was at it, I lightened things up a bit. My metaphor for the summer. Lighten up. The mood. The load. The to do list. The guilt. The anger. The couldashouldawoulda's. All of it.

This is my summer of floating downstream, where ever the flow takes me. I'm giving in and letting go, just to see what happens. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to widen the text space for my life while I'm at it. And shrink all the stuff in the sidebar. If you knew what a type A control freak worrier I have become, you'd understand that this is a really huge deal for me. I micromanage minutia. Well I'm looking to turn over a new leaf here.

This is what I'm considering the upside to surgery and physical and mental limitations. Lighten up and let it go. From all I've read, it will be almost a month before my brain works like it used to, if I'm lucky, and a few months before I'm sleeping better, and maybe a few more until my insides are all patched up. So I'm going to keep thinking about Francis, and how he needs to just lighten the hell up. The only thing I don't plan on lightening is my hair color, though I'm thinking I could do with half the length. Long hair is more work than I'm interested in lately. And I'm feeling pretty lazy right now.

Hope you like the lighter template, hope it's easier on the eyes. Hope your loads are lighter too, and why did that just make me think of laundry? Oh well, baby steps.

Here's the theme song for this summer. Just Breathe. Thank you Anna Nalick.

Life's like an hourglass glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button here so just
cradle your head in your hands and breathe...

Where the Hell is Matt?

If you don't know who Matt is, it's time you got acquainted. He has some of the most compelling, smile and tear inducing videos on youtube. He travels, does a little dance and invites locals to join him. This new one is a little different, as he joins the world in learning some new dances.

Matt is my hero, and a true ambassador for world peace. Enjoy.

If you want to see his earlier videos, which are equally inspiring, tear and smile inducing, here's his web page.
