In the blink of an eye...

I wish I could slow down Spring and watch it in slow motion, rewind, pause, and make it last longer. I am greedy that way. I've been doing what I do every May - taking an insane amount of pictures, fighting with my digital point and shoot camera, trying to catch what I'm seeing so I can look at it some more. I keep all my pictures archived on my hard drive by date, partly so I can compare variations in bloom time over the years.I used to keep one of those garden journals, but photos are my shorthand these days. I guess this is what retired lab geeks must do with their spare brain capacity, so I can know that the lovely yellow-green narcissus bud from my last post bloomed in all it's glory last week, May 1st to be exact.

Last year, April 15th:

And so on. I think there might be a trend with the two week back and forth thing, but I didn't look back any farther. I've lived here 14 years and I never cease to be amazed and surprised by what will and won't grow here, and how different and yet the same each year can be.

Anyhow, I've been wallowing in this Spring, begging it to slow down, just like every year. I can take all the pictures I want, nature doesn't care. She just marches on in her mysterious ways.

Here are a few more pretty things that had made me happy since my last post, some wild or native, some cultivated, all loved.

It's almost too much isn't it?

Every time I snap pictures like this, I hear a voice in my head, from the finale of one of my favorite shows, Six Feet Under, where Nate's ghost tells his sister Claire who takes one last photo of her family before she leaves home to start her life:  You can't take a picture of this, it's already gone.

Maybe so. But still we try to, don't we?

Finally, here are two things I love most, my babies all grown up on Mother's Day.

Now I really, really wish I had a pause and rewind button for my life!

Hope something lovely is growing and blooming where ever you are.

p.s.

If you want to hear the wisdom of Nate, it's on the video link at the bottom of the page, 2:16.
I miss that show.

  1. What a great way to journal. Your photos are reminders of how quickly we see spring come and go....seems we're onto nuclear summer already with temps as high as the 90's today. Feels like weather one would expect down south. I'm hoping it doesn't bring the mosquitoes with it...that would really end my garden pleasures.
I'm glad I have your photos to help me stretch the loveliness of spring. Your kids are beautiful. They grow like weeds!

  2. Our spring is in full flower, too. Since our temperatures are lower than normal, it's been quite a nice long spring. We have only seen 60 degrees a couple of times so far, and this weekend is supposed to be wet and cold. Sigh. I'll just pop over here and look at your pictures.

  3. Magical. And another sort of book for the bolsa. Love it. Funny, in scrolling down the page and various flowers coming into view, the bombardment of associations, Brave New World from the as yet unfurled fern (looks like a baby factory, four leaf clover searches (never EVER found on, but lied a lot), flower names to be adored "Jack in the Pulpit", "bachelor buttons" popped into my head even tho there aren't any here. Instant Holland memories w/the tulip. Stepping a a bee, ouch, stickers in my socks. I need to move in with you Mel! And best of all the last shot. Stole it for my bolsa. Thanks! d

  4. Beautiful. It is as close as I am getting at this time. We had snow last week!

But I pulled weeds all day, or so it seems, and I got one emerging bed done. We have had a spring designed for maximum weed growth, especially dandelions. My beds are simply loaded with them. Alas, they are the only color we have at this time.

So enjoy your spring, then come up here and enjoy it all over again. : )

  5. Ah! I Love yellow flowers best! Except for the type of blooms you have at the bottom there. Those are my most favorite kind too : )

  6. So, I know I'm about a hundred years behind, but I wanted to tell you how much I loved your comment on my blog -- I'm so glad you could relate to what I was saying and that you've gone through something similar. It's somewhat hard for me to find people who really get it, and you're one of them. Keep reading and commenting ok? XXOO

  7. I've had a great time snapping spring blossoms as well, but I'm ready for it to pass...too many storms this year. I'm sitting at my desk listening to the radio reporting tornado warnings for every county around me. Your spring captures are lovely! And I completely agree with you about kids growing up in a blink of an eye.

  8. I love your flora photos especially those plants and flowers not easily recognized. No wonder you're feeling "greedy".
